International Day of Yoga 21 June

An Irish Mural for Austria

The municipality of Vordernberg in the district of Leoben in Styria, Austria is soon to welcome The Bogside Artists of Derry, N.Ireland. The scenic village has been chosen to speerhead a movement towards peace in Europe by means of culture and art. The three muralists have been invited there by the initiators of the program, Desmond Doyle and Hannes Misseton to paint a mural for the village on the theme of Europe’s decade of struggle towards peace.

From the beginning of the last century in Europe we have seen the Finnish civil war, the war in Estonia, Hungary, the Irish civil war, the civil war in Russia and subsequent invasions of Poland and Hungary, the Spanish civil war, the Yugoslav, Kosovo, Croatian, Bosnian wars of attrition and, of course, two world wars. The history of Europe is awash in blood. As the man says, “if we keep on doing what we are doing, we will keep on getting what we are getting.”

The imperative therefore is to try something different. And the something different we must try is accessing the communicative power of art to raise consciousness of our collective culpability in these avoidable disasters.
