THE BOGSIDE ARTISTS Open their new studio

Released on: March 2, 2009, 11:39 am
Author: The Bogside Artists
Industry: Education

So finally we have opened our new studio. Below is a photo of our old studio. It used to be situated behind The Bogside Inn, a famous landmark in Derry. It was difficult to get to and on the odd occasionwhen tourists were actually directed to it you could tell they were none too happy to call in. One woman memorably thought it was a tattoo parlor. We were so skint at the time that we cursed ourselvesfor not having learnt the trade. The rent was cheap enough though. and despite very little help from the local funding bodies and overt antipathy from some those involved in the tourist trade we still managed to stay afloat. Then, one bleak morning, we were informed that the area was due for demolition and it seemed to us as if the heavens had closed upon us.

Undaunted, as they say, we found ourselves new and better premises that form indeed the gateway to the Bogside. This area just at the foot of Rossville Street where it joins William Street usedto be called “Agro Corner” by the British soldiers who used to mill around there like chicks around an old boot, lost and bewildered, but relieved to have something to lean up against. Kids would soon be throwing stones at them and retaliations would inevitably ensue, often leading to full-blown rioting that would last right into the wee hours of the morning with concomitant house arrests.

In 1994 we created our first mural, The Petrol Bomber. It was greatly admired at the time and made it to many front pages in newspapers all around the world. It is still admired by most people who see it. And if we thought the world had ended we can now rejoice in the fact that a superior power has turned our defeat into victory. Our new studio is so much better wewonder how we managed to survive at all back at our old gaff.

Above is a flick of us just after we finished the Bernadette Mural. Seems like yesterday and we little thought then we would go on to paint ten more murals that together comprise THE PEOPLE’S GALLERY now fast becoming one of the most visited sites in the whole of Ireland. And we even have a book about it too that was launched recently by John Hume. “Fantastic and entertaining” he called it, which it is, of course. How could it not be?You can get it here.

Nobel Laureate John Hume with Kevin Hasson and Tom Kelly, two members of the group known as The Bogside Artists. In the background is the new studio. The missing member is William Kelly (Tom’s brother) who is in trouble with J.K Rowling’s legal reps over a book he wrote way back in 1990 called Travels with Li Po. The Bogside Artists’ Book

Released on: March 2, 2009, 11:09 am
Author: The Bogside Artists
Industry: Travel

Last Friday saw the publication of a book called The People’s Galleryabout the work of The Bogside Artists from Derry, N.Ireland. This informative and challenging book, written by them, is on the subject of murals in general, but more specifically, about their own work as painters in the heart of Derry itself, the Bogside. It contains not only spectacular photos of their huge murals from their own archives but commentaries from playwright Brian Friel, Bernadette McAliskey, JohnHume, retired Bishop Daly and other figures from the worlds of art and politics. Among its pages you will find humour, anecdote, historical fact and a step-by-step account of the making of a mural. It explores the American-Ireland connection in depth and gives a highly entertaining synopsis of that period of political and spiritual ferment known as The Sixties. For students and visitors alike it is also packed full of historical facts that will make Irish history a breeze for those who want to learn about it.

In the wake of the ongoing fiasco that is „The Turner Prize”, this book comes as a breath of fresh air to the musty studios and galleries of modern art. It serves to remind the alienated public what art was originally meant to be and to do. It is a measure of the artists’ achievement that they were able to do this work in the face of impossible circumstances and general indifference from the arts funding bodies throughout the UK. It is a measure of their resolve that they continue to paint, in service to their goal of 1993 to make of the Bogside an open-air gallery, a people’s gallery, that they have humorously dubbed “The Bogside Modern”.

Nobel Peace Laureate John Hume launched the book on the afternoon of Friday 30th February 2009. He had this to say:

I feel very privileged and honoured to be with the Bogside Artists on this very important day for the launch of their book - "The People' Gallery". The book is a fascinating and entertaining read. As well as accounts of each of the twelves murals, there is a short history of Ireland with special reference to Derry, an interesting look back at world event in the second half of the twentieth century, especially the struggle for civil rights in America and here in the North....As Brian Friel the world renowned playwright said of their work - "The work of the Bogside Artists is celebrated locally and internationally, but it is their reputation that is important both to the artists and to their locality. ....This publication is an important record of a pivotal period of our history, and I have no doubt that it will make an enormous contribution to the respect for and interest in our city. ... My warmest congratulations again to the Bogside Artists on this outstanding work and I wish them every success."

The Bogside Artists’ Studio in Derry, N.Ireland is home to the three men who painted the famous People’s Gallery of the Bogside. There, the artists give presentations on their history and conduct tours of their twelve large-scale murals. Two of the artists have recently returned from a U.S. promotional tour for their book The People’s Gallery. Lavishly illustrated with unique photos, it throws open a high window onto three decades of conflict. You can find out more about the artists from http://www.bogsideartists.com where you can also order their book.

Unlike the celebrated murals in Mexico it should be noted that the majority of these murals were painted while the conflict was still going on. Moreover, they were financed, not by the government, but by the small contributions of the local citizens. Tom, William and Kevin collected the pennies, cap-in-hand to finance a project that is now a must-see destination for anyone visiting Ireland.

Contemporary Mosaic Art Gallery Represents Ten of the Finest Mosaic Artists in the World

Released on: February 16, 2009, 1:24 am

Contemporary Mosaic Art Gallery represents ten of the finest mosaic artists in the world, Giulio Menossi from Italy,Martin Cheek from the UK, Ginger TerryDeborah Wahl, Jacqueline Iskander, Carol Shelkin, Jacki Gran, from the USA,Sophie Drouin from Canada, David McDonagh from Ireland, and Lubosz Karwat from Poland.

The style and presentation of the mosaics are all very different, from the very traditional to the modern, abstract and decorative.

Each piece of art is original and hand crafted by the artist using either traditional tools or modern implements.

The artists bring to their work countless hours of dedication to give life to their designs, in a way that best communicates their connection to the material and the message they are communicating. The result is a treasured piece of art that gives these mosaic works a mystical and transcendent quality.

What makes mosaic art so amazing? Each tesserae is cut by hand with great precision to create the exact shape for a specific position in the design. Standing close to the mosaic each tesserae is visible, standing further away the individual tesserae aren’t seen any longer and the mosaic is seen as a whole.

Mosaics have been contributing their richness to our lives for centuries, helping us understand the world around us through symbol, political statements, religious stories and cultural influences, by enriching our environments in public and private spaces. The current resurgence in contemporary mosaics offers all of these same enriching qualities to our lives in public and private spaces today as they have done in the past.

Contemporary Mosaic Art is definitely an option for investment, for collectors wanting to acquire a beautiful mosaics at the beginning of an artist’s career, for home owners and decorators wanting a unique piece of art to captivate and excite the senses (and as unique conversation pieces) and for public galleries, wanting to provide for their members and visitors the newest and most innovative art.
