Jumeirah Beach Hotel has announced that it will once again be spearheading the BIG6 Fishing Tournament which is set to test fishing enthusiasts on 20th March.

The teams of keen fishermen will leave the Jumeirah Beach Hotel Marina to take to the waters of the Arabian Gulf in the hope of catching not only a big fish like a King fish or Hammour, but also to land themselves a big prize.

This year the tournament is again being hosted by Jumeirah Beach Hotel, in association with ART Marine and Riviera, and the competition will allow fishermen and woman of all abilities the chance to put their skills to the test and compete for spectacular prizes in six different categories, with the biggest judged catch receiving the grand prize of a full day yacht charter.

The Tournament is due to commence early in the morning at 7am when the eager fishermen will sail out from Jumeirah Beach Hotel’s Marina on a mission to test their skills and luck. After enjoying a great day at sea with family and friends, the teams will have a sumptuous barbeque dinner followed by the prize-giving ceremony which awaits the participants back at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel\’s North Beach.

Teams of up to 5 members are eligible to take part in the competition and with the fantastic weather, the beautiful Gulf with its stunningDubai coastline, including the impressive island chains of The Palm, The World, and The Palm Deira, and fun atmosphere, the event has always proved popular with all the participants involved (fish excepted).

Sky+HD stage a Titanic screening of epic proportions

Sky+HD gave lucky members of the public the chance to climb inside the screen and be a part of their favourite film by staging the ultimate High Definition screening of Titanic – in a swimming pool.

To celebrate the biggest ever season of Oscar-winning films on Sky Movies Drama HD, the Golden Lane swimming pool in Barbican, London, was transformed into the high seas of the Atlantic Ocean, complete with lifeboats, stray icebergs and film fans decked out in period costumes where they played their own part in the adventure. As the classic Oscar-winning film was played out in glorious High Definition film fans were transported back to the events of 1912 for the ultimate interactive movie experience.

Alex Zane – host of Sky Movies’ Guest List – took his place in a lifeboat amongst the crowd: “The idea of watching Titanic in totally immersive high definition, in a life jacket, floating in a life boat is about as close to the experience of being on the ship itself as you could or probably would ever want to get. An amazing experience with some real movie fans.”

Iran Heritage Foundation presents Remaking of Iran exhibition at the British Museum

Iran Heritage Foundation in association with the British Museum opens the ‘Shah ‘Abbas: the remaking of Iran’ exhibition.

The exhibition documents and illustrates the work of 17th century artists and craftsmen under the patronage of Shah ‘Abbas I and his wider contribution to Persian culture, architecture and language. Displays include artefacts such as lavish gold-ground silks, carpets, manuscripts, paintings, metal work and calligraphy. The exhibition includes gifts that Shah ‘Abbas endowed to shrines in Mashhad, Ardabil and Qum, many of which have never been previously displayed outside of Iran.

Vahid Alaghband, Chairman of the Iranian Heritage Foundation and Group Chairman of Balli Group, commented: “Shah ‘Abbas was the most eminent ruler of the Safavid dynasty in Persia who, with his military successes and efficient administrative system, raised Iran to the status of a great power. When he died his dominions extended from the Tigris to the Indus. Through trade and diplomacy he fostered good relations with Europe and welcomed European diplomats in Iran, whilst ushering in a golden period for Persian art. He commissioned many beautiful works of art, grand architecture and restored major monuments across the country. Today, his legacy lives on, in the magnificent buildings of Isfahan and through his opulent gifts found in many Iranian holy shrines.

“This fabulous exhibition is a celebration of the achievements of one of Iran’s greatest rulers and showcases the vibrancy and culture of 17th century Iran” he added.

Hays reports schools increasingly turning to supply teachers

The demand for supply teachers continues to remain buoyant in the current climate, according to the specialist recruitment company, Hays. Schools have come to rely on supply teachers to fill their staff shortages, as the requirement for sickness and emergency cover is as prevalent now as it has always been.

“Supply teachers who provide sickness support and cover emergencies at short notice are very much in demand, especially given the harsher winter conditions that we’ve experienced this year,” commented Stephen Heard, National Operations Director at Hays Education.

He emphasised, “Supply teachers not only make a significant contribution to staffing needs, but they are also pivotal in ensuring that schools run smoothly and that standards are maintained in the education sector”.

Supply teaching offers a great lifestyle choice and allows for greater flexibility, which suits people who have family or childcare commitments. Stephen continued, “Having the choice to work a limited number of days per week is a valuable option for some teachers, although they have to be flexible – in terms of both school and location – and available to travel at very little notice”.

Working as a supply teacher also allows the individual to cement their experience by working in a number of different schools. An NQT starting out in supply teaching will develop valuable skills and a breadth of experience that they would not have otherwise gained in a permanent role. Regular stints as a supply teacher can also serve as a valuable stepping-stone to apermanent teaching job. “It is important to foster relationships with the school as you will also be considered for a permanent job when one becomes available,” explained Stephen.

Opting for a longer-term contract is a way of bridging the permanent and supply teaching divide. It helps to build a teaching career, allowing the teacher to become a more integral part of the school and have greater involvement in planning class activities. Supply teaching provides an excellent platform to build a track record of experience and make a mark in the industry.

Scottish motorists leave Russell standing for Kiera

Scottish drivers are ten times more likely to stop at the roadside for Hollywood star Kiera Knightley than controversial comedian Russell Brand, while only 1% would help Kerry Katona, according to a recent survey.

Kiera Knightley topped a poll by Internet tyres retailer Blackcircles.com, with 30% of all Scottish motorists saying they would come to her rescue if she had a flat tyre. In contrast, the figures revealed that TV & radio presenter Russell Brand, himself no stranger to TV and movie success, would be helped by just 3% of motorists in the country.

Former Atomic Kitten singer and reality TV star Kerry Katona fared worst of all in the survey of more than 1,000 drivers, with just 1% saying they would give her roadside assistance, leaving her joint bottom of the survey with football ‘hardman’ Vinnie Jones.

Mike Welch, managing director of Blackcircles.com, which operates from 95 garages in Scotland, says the survey highlights some quirky points about motorists’ behaviour. He says: “It’s reassuring that there are still some Good Samaritans on our roads, especially if you happen to be a beautiful Hollywood A-lister.

“My advice to Kerry and Russell would be, if you’re planning a trip to Scotland in the near future, check your tyres immediately because the public won’t be coming to your rescue!”

LC Sciences’ Versatile Microfluidics Chip Technology Extended to Target Selection Applications

Houston, TX – LC Sciences has announced the availability of a custom target enrichment service for next-generation sequencing applications. LC Sciences now provides a service for Target-Specific Selection of a defined genomic region (such as Mbp region at a specific location, suspected cancer regions, SNP regions, regions for genomic comparisons) or RNA sequences (such as sets of transcriptome sequences known f r o m previous screening experiments, mRNAs, and miRNAs). This new service enables researchers to take full advantage of new “next-generation” high throughput sequencing technologies.

It is clear that these new sequencing technologies can be more effectively utilized for systematic studies of genetic variation by targeting certain specific regions (subsets) of complex genomes. Essentially, our service achieves more coverage and deeper sequencing by reducing sample complexity and focusing reads on the areas of interest.

LC Sciences µParaflo® technology’s unique combination of advanced microfluidics and innovative synthesis chemistry provides a robust synthesis process which is necessary to achieve high quality selection and the flexibility to handle almost any target selection project. This technology has been used to produce custom sequence microarrays [Nucleic Acids Res. 2004,32,5409] and custom designed oligonucleotide mixture libraries (OligoMix®) [Nature. 2004,432,1050] since 2003 and is now particularly well suited to providing target selection solutions. The versatility of the technology makes it a good fit for the diverse needs of researchers embarking on new high-throughput sequencing projects.

“It’s really the flexibility of the technology that sets it apart f r o m others”, says Dr. Christoph Eicken, Head of Technical Services, Microarrays. “First, this is a completely custom synthesis technology, meaning almost any selected genomic region of any species and all known RNA transcripts can be targeted. Second, target selection may be achieved by hybridization using complementary capture probes immobilized on surface or by in-solution hybridization. By altering the target selection approach we take, we can address the widely varied needs of each individual sequencing project. With our help, researchers can tailor design the target selection process based on the specificity, coverage, selection resolution and throughput requirements of their particular project.”

LC Sciences’ microarray based approach utilizes thousands of custom oligonucleotide sequences which are synthesized in situ on a programmable high density microfluidics chip as capture probes designed to target specific regions of interest in any genome (or transcriptome). Samples are hybridized to the chip, undesired sequences are washed off and the captured target sequences are recovered by eluting them f r o m the chip. The selected target sequences are ready for high-throughput sequencing or further processing.

When target selection in-solution makes sense, this flexible chemistry can directly synthesize biotinylated or phosphorylated oligonucleotides (capture probes) that are designed to target specific genomic/sequence regions of interest. After hybridization with a sample, magnetic beads are added and the capture probes are affinity linked to the beads. The captured target sequences are separated f r o m other sequences by washing the beads after which the target sequences can be recovered. Alternatively, the oligonucleotides (OligoMix®) may be immobilized on beads prior to target selection, again depending on the needs of the particular project.

LC Sciences currently offers its Target-Specific Selection application as a service, as it has successfully done with other applications of the µParaflo® technology such as miRNA profiling, small RNA discovery, kinase profiling and epitope mapping with peptide arrays, and others.

“We find that researchers would prefer to spend their valuable time focusing on their research, not figuring out how to make successful use of someone else’s new technology”, says Chris Hebel, Director of Business Development. “We offer a comprehensive solution: customers tell us their experiment goals, send us their samples and we provide the material ready for sequencing. There is no reason they need to become target selection experts to keep their research moving forward. We have already developed methods to design optimized hybridization probes and suitable experimental procedures and conditions for different sample types, such as miRNA, small RNA, or genomic DNA samples, on different sequencing platforms. We can even perform the high-throughput sequencing and deliver the results, as not all labs have access to next-generation sequencers yet.”
