Press Release Body: LV=, the UK insurance provider, has found 80% of drivers have left valuables in their cars. This carelessness has lead to an increase in the number of cars being broken into, with one in four motorists saying that they’ve been a victim of a car break in.

According to a report from LV=, high value items such as mobile phones, clothes and even wallets are regularly left inside vehicles whilst parked on UK roads. The value of goods left by men is generally much higher than that of more safety conscious women. In fact, according to the research carried out amongst 2044 adults, the average value of goods left in cars by men is £380. Younger drivers are similarly lax about their belongings with drivers aged 34 or under admitting to leaving an average of £334 worth of goods in their vehicle. This compares to a national average of £283.

Cars are most at risk of being broken into whilst parked on residential streets, with 40% of all thefts now taking place whilst the car is parked directly outside the owners’ home with a further 18% of thefts taking place whilst the car is parked in other residential areas. Less than one in ten (9%) car break-ins take place in commercial car parks, despite the perceived higher risk.

Emma Holyer, spokesperson for LV= Car Insurance, said: “These figures show a casual attitude amongst motorists when it comes to leaving their belongings in their car. The fact is that most car break-ins are by opportunist thieves who would probably not bother to break into the car if it looked as though it didn’t contain anything to steal.”

The research from LV= found that the most frequently stolen items from unattended cars are detachable car stereos and radios, CDs, wallets and purses and satellite navigation systems.

“Some car insurance policies will cover contents so motorists should ensure they have this cover so that if the worst happens they are not out of pocket,” Ms. Holyer continued. “However, to avoid the hassle of having your car broken into, we’d advise people not to leave any visible valuables in their car in the first place, as this will massively reduce the likelihood of any break in.”

Press Release Body: New research carried out by LV=, the UK car insurer, has revealed that one in six drivers are breaking child car seat laws and putting their young passengers’ safety at risk.

By law, drivers must ensure that all children younger than 12 and shorter than 135cm (4′5″) use a child or booster seat. Without this, the risk of fatality or injury in the event of an accident rises by 71% and 69% respectively.

The new laws were introduced in 2006 and the research by car insurer LV= has found many drivers are ignorant of their legal duty of care. One in five (21%) of those who fail to comply with the law say they are unaware the guidelines even exist.

Worryingly, one in ten of those who are aware of the guidelines say they just disregard them and don’t bother to fit safety seats, despite the fact that the laws were brought in to ensure that all children are protected on the roads, to reduce fatalities and injuries.

Not only is the failure to use a proper child seat dangerous for both the passenger and the driver, it also carries a potential penalty fine of £500.

The LV= study shows that children are most at risk when travelling with friends of the family, with over a quarter (26%) of those admitting to not using car child seats.

The research also found that even in cases when an appropriate car seat is used, almost a quarter of drivers (24%) say they do not check the safety seat is installed properly, potentially putting their young passengers in danger.

In 2007 there were more than 3000 child casualties as a result of road accidents, including 121 fatalities. With such high stakes, LV= is today calling on all drivers to ensure they take every precaution and install appropriate safety equipment, to protect themselves and their passengers from harm.

John O’Roarke, Managing Director of LV= Car Insurance, said: “Huge strides have been made to improve child safety on the road in recent years, not least with the introduction of compulsory child seats in 2006. However, it’s clear that many drivers are still confused about the law and for one reason or another, are not following the legislation. So we’d urge all drivers to make sure they’re aware of the guidelines - child seats can take just five minutes to install and greatly reduce the chances of injury to everyone in the car.”

LV= will automatically replace child safety seats for anyone who has taken out their car insurance policy whose car has been in an accident, even if the seat looks undamaged.

Apart from the fact that driving without insurance is against the law in the UK, and those found guilty of it could get themselves a criminal record, it also costs other car drivers more than half a billion pounds per year, according to the Motor Insurers Bureau. This equates to around £30 extra on every premium, effectively being subsidized by the fully insured user.

“There is no question that driving without insurance is both unlawful and ill-advised,” says RIAS Managing Director Janet Connor. “If you are worried about the cost of insurance, it is worth talking to your insurance provider to check whether there are any savings to be made. At RIAS, for example, we specialise in finding tailored insurance solutions for the over 50s, who can often benefit from cheaper premiums because of low mileage, or because their cars are parked off-road or kept in a garage.
