Kuala Lumpur – The normally peaceful and serene ambiance of the Singapore River would be replaced with the grunts and groans of both men and women in sleek dragon boats as they race to the finishing line during the 27th Singapore River Regatta from 21 – 22 November 2009. Participants would be required to complete a short dash of 300 meters between the Elgin Bridge and Cavenagh Bridge. Thousands of spectators are expected to line the riverbanks to watch their favourite teams battle it. With visitors from the neighbouring countries expected to join the festivity, Singapore hotels could certainly look forward to a roaring business.

Participation in the 27th Singapore River Regatta is via 10- and 20-crew teams. This year, several categories are offered for each team type such as the National Championship, Tertiary, Public Service and Corporate. Up to 100 dragon boat teams are expected to participate in the regatta with the majority coming from private clubs in Singapore. Amateur paddlers would come face to face with seasoned racers, ensuring an exciting and entertaining time throughout the 2-day event. Organized by the Singapore Dragon Boat Association in partnership with the People’s Association and the Civil Service Club, Singapore River Regatta certainly not for the faint-hearted as it can be particularly challenging both physically and mentally.
