Egypt holidays are as popular as ever

Released on: February 27, 2009, 7:46 am
Author: Direct Traffic
Industry: Travel

Egypt is a divers’ heaven, legendary snorkelling country packed with wonderful sea life. Water sports score high and the country’s thriving purpose-built resorts are renowned for their excellent facilities. Not to mention the pyramids, Cairo and more camels than you can shake a stick at.

But in today’s wobbly economy can you afford a long haul holiday in an exotic place, complete with the risk of unforeseen expenses and the need for lashings of spending money? The short answer is ‘yes’! An exotic destination needn’t be an expensive one. Use a combination of resourcefulness, patience and lateral thinking and you can save a small fortune.

Holiday price comparison website BeatTheBrochure.com reveal their top three tips for saving money on Egypt holidays.

Top tip number one: Shop around. Let the internet find you the best value holiday clothes, sun lotions, hats… squeeze the best value out of every single thing you take with you. It all adds up.

Most importantly of all, shop around for the cheapest Egypt holidays online. While your local travel agent is probably wonderful, they won’t have access to the entire package holiday market. And buying online invariably nets you excellent discounts on brochure prices.

“We use unique data search and retrieval software to track down the lowest cost holidays from a raft of major suppliers including Thomson, First Choice and Thomas Cook.” Says a BeatTheBrochure.com spokesman. “If you find cheaper Egypt holidays in any brochure, anywhere, at any time, we want to know about it!”

Top tip number two: DIY. Instead of eating out, buy fresh local foods and enjoy picnics. Don’t spend a fortune on entertainment, just chill out. Buy local wines and lounge around watching the world go by. Rediscover what real relaxation’s all about. Walk a lot and take in the scenery. Read books. Sit in the warm sea. Think. Keep life simple, pared down to the bone. Holidays needn’t be active. And chilling will save you a load of cash!

Top tip number three: Experience life without shopping, our national pastime. You might be surprised how much pointless shopping you do without even consciously realising it, buying stuff just for the sake of it. Give shopping a rest on holiday. Buy the stuff you really need but nothing else. Lie on the beach and enjoy your Egypt holidays to the full without so much as sniffing the inside of a shop.

How much do you think you can save on your Egypt holidays by shunning shopping, making your own entertainment and doing a spot of very effective online research? BeatTheBrochure recommends that you suck it and see!

Sky+HD stage a Titanic screening of epic proportions

Released on: February 27, 2009, 7:40 am
Author: Sky+HD
Industry: Entertainment

Sky+HD gave lucky members of the public the chance to climb inside the screen and be a part of their favourite film by staging the ultimate High Definition screening of Titanic – in a swimming pool.

To celebrate the biggest ever season of Oscar-winning films on Sky Movies Drama HD, the Golden Lane swimming pool in Barbican, London, was transformed into the high seas of the Atlantic Ocean, complete with lifeboats, stray icebergs and film fans decked out in period costumes where they played their own part in the adventure. As the classic Oscar-winning film was played out in glorious High Definition film fans were transported back to the events of 1912 for the ultimate interactive movie experience.

Alex Zane – host of Sky Movies’ Guest List – took his place in a lifeboat amongst the crowd: “The idea of watching Titanic in totally immersive high definition, in a life jacket, floating in a life boat is about as close to the experience of being on the ship itself as you could or probably would ever want to get. An amazing experience with some real movie fans.”

Head of Sky+HD Richard Jakeman commented: “Now we’re showing more movies than ever in High Definition we thought it only fitting to extend the HD experience beyond the screen. It’s gone down so well that perhaps we should carry on the tradition – maybe a staging of Jaws somewhere off the British Coast, or even a High Definition screening of The Sounds of Music in the mountains”.

All is not lost however for those who unfortunately missed out on the one off showing as all the excitement and intensity of Titanic and other Oscar winning classics can still be experienced from the comfort of the living room in glorious High Definition, as part of the Oscars Season on Sky Movies Drama HD, throughout February.

Released on: February 27, 2009, 7:37 am
Author: Balli Group
Industry: Entertainment

Iran Heritage Foundation in association with the British Museum opens the ‘Shah ‘Abbas: the remaking of Iran’ exhibition.

The exhibition documents and illustrates the work of 17th century artists and craftsmen under the patronage of Shah ‘Abbas I and his wider contribution to Persian culture, architecture and language. Displays include artefacts such as lavish gold-ground silks, carpets, manuscripts, paintings, metal work and calligraphy. The exhibition includes gifts that Shah ‘Abbas endowed to shrines in Mashhad, Ardabil and Qum, many of which have never been previously displayed outside of Iran.

Vahid Alaghband, Chairman of the Iranian Heritage Foundation and Group Chairman of Balli Group, commented: “Shah ‘Abbas was the most eminent ruler of the Safavid dynasty in Persia who, with his military successes and efficient administrative system, raised Iran to the status of a great power. When he died his dominions extended from the Tigris to the Indus. Through trade and diplomacy he fostered good relations with Europe and welcomed European diplomats in Iran, whilst ushering in a golden period for Persian art. He commissioned many beautiful works of art, grand architecture and restored major monuments across the country. Today, his legacy lives on, in the magnificent buildings of Isfahan and through his opulent gifts found in many Iranian holy shrines.

“This fabulous exhibition is a celebration of the achievements of one of Iran’s greatest rulers and showcases the vibrancy and culture of 17th century Iran” he added.

Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum, said: “My colleagues and I are grateful to The Iranian Heritage Foundation and its chairmanVahid Alaghband for their generous support of the exhibition, the latest in a long series of joint projects with the British Museum to present Iranian culture to the widest public in London.”

Hays reports schools increasingly turning to supply teachers

Released on: February 27, 2009, 7:34 am
Author: Alexandra Tucker
Industry: Education

The demand for supply teachers continues to remain buoyant in the current climate, according to the specialist recruitment company, Hays. Schools have come to rely on supply teachers to fill their staff shortages, as the requirement for sickness and emergency cover is as prevalent now as it has always been.

“Supply teachers who provide sickness support and cover emergencies at short notice are very much in demand, especially given the harsher winter conditions that we’ve experienced this year,” commented Stephen Heard, National Operations Director at Hays Education.

He emphasised, “Supply teachers not only make a significant contribution to staffing needs, but they are also pivotal in ensuring that schools run smoothly and that standards are maintained in the education sector”.

Supply teaching offers a great lifestyle choice and allows for greater flexibility, which suits people who have family or childcare commitments. Stephen continued, “Having the choice to work a limited number of days per week is a valuable option for some teachers, although they have to be flexible – in terms of both school and location – and available to travel at very little notice”.

Working as a supply teacher also allows the individual to cement their experience by working in a number of different schools. An NQT starting out in supply teaching will develop valuable skills and a breadth of experience that they would not have otherwise gained in a permanent role. This gives them a chance to look at different schools and to establish the type of environment that suits their personalities best.

Regular stints as a supply teacher can also serve as a valuable stepping-stone to apermanent teaching job. “It is important to foster relationships with the school as you will also be considered for a permanent job when one becomes available,” explained Stephen.

Opting for a longer-term contract is a way of bridging the permanent and supply teaching divide. It helps to build a teaching career, allowing the teacher to become a more integral part of the school and have greater involvement in planning class activities. Supply teaching provides an excellent platform to build a track record of experience and make a mark in the industry.

“Fostering a relationship with a specialist recruiter that deals in supply teaching vacancies means that you can establish a career and become known among schools, which will subsequently ask for you by name as your reputation in the industry grows,” Stephen concluded.

Scottish motorists leave Russell standing for Kiera

Released on: February 27, 2009, 7:20 am
Author: Paver Smith
Industry: Automotive

Scottish drivers are ten times more likely to stop at the roadside for Hollywood star Kiera Knightley than controversial comedian Russell Brand, while only 1% would help Kerry Katona, according to a recent survey.

Kiera Knightley topped a poll by Internet tyres retailer Blackcircles.com, with 30% of all Scottish motorists saying they would come to her rescue if she had a flat tyre. In contrast, the figures revealed that TV & radio presenter Russell Brand, himself no stranger to TV and movie success, would be helped by just 3% of motorists in the country.

Former Atomic Kitten singer and reality TV star Kerry Katona fared worst of all in the survey of more than 1,000 drivers, with just 1% saying they would give her roadside assistance, leaving her joint bottom of the survey with football ‘hardman’ Vinnie Jones.

Mike Welch, managing director of Blackcircles.com, which operates from 95 garages in Scotland, says the survey highlights some quirky points about motorists’ behaviour. He says: “It’s reassuring that there are still some Good Samaritans on our roads, especially if you happen to be a beautiful Hollywood A-lister.

“My advice to Kerry and Russell would be, if you’re planning a trip to Scotland in the near future, check your tyres immediately because the public won’t be coming to your rescue!”

Blackcircles.com operates by allowing customers to buy their tyres online or over the phone and have them fitted at one of more than a thousand independent garages across the country, with savings of up to 40 percent compared to high street tyre retailers.

Notes to Editors
Blackcircles.com was founded by Mike Welch and has more than 300,000 clients and sales of more than £10m.

Mr Welch is the former business and e-commerce manager at Kwik Fit and founded Blackcircles.com in 2001.

Blackcircles.com offers over 40,000 tyre items from budget tyres to mid-range and premium brands.

Blackcircles.com was recently named as one of 20 winners at the 2009 BT Business Essence of the Entrepreneur awards, where Mr Welch also received the Most Outstanding Entrepreneur of the Year award.

LC Sciences’ Versatile Microfluidics Chip Technology Extended to Target Selection Applications

Released on: February 27, 2009, 7:10 am
Author: Chris Hebel
Industry: Biotech

Houston, TX – LC Sciences has announced the availability of a custom target enrichment service for next-generation sequencing applications. LC Sciences now provides a service for Target-Specific Selection of a defined genomic region (such as Mbp region at a specific location, suspected cancer regions, SNP regions, regions for genomic comparisons) or RNA sequences (such as sets of transcriptome sequences known f r o m previous screening experiments, mRNAs, and miRNAs). This new service enables researchers to take full advantage of new “next-generation” high throughput sequencing technologies.

It is clear that these new sequencing technologies can be more effectively utilized for systematic studies of genetic variation by targeting certain specific regions (subsets) of complex genomes. Essentially, our service achieves more coverage and deeper sequencing by reducing sample complexity and focusing reads on the areas of interest.

LC Sciences µParaflo® technology’s unique combination of advanced microfluidics and innovative synthesis chemistry provides a robust synthesis process which is necessary to achieve high quality selection and the flexibility to handle almost any target selection project. This technology has been used to produce custom sequence microarrays [Nucleic Acids Res. 2004,32,5409] and custom designed oligonucleotide mixture libraries (OligoMix®) [Nature. 2004,432,1050] since 2003 and is now particularly well suited to providing target selection solutions. The versatility of the technology makes it a good fit for the diverse needs of researchers embarking on new high-throughput sequencing projects.

“It’s really the flexibility of the technology that sets it apart f r o m others”, says Dr. Christoph Eicken, Head of Technical Services, Microarrays. “First, this is a completely custom synthesis technology, meaning almost any selected genomic region of any species and all known RNA transcripts can be targeted. Second, target selection may be achieved by hybridization using complementary capture probes immobilized on surface or by in-solution hybridization. By altering the target selection approach we take, we can address the widely varied needs of each individual sequencing project. With our help, researchers can tailor design the target selection process based on the specificity, coverage, selection resolution and throughput requirements of their particular project.”

LC Sciences’ microarray based approach utilizes thousands of custom oligonucleotide sequences which are synthesized in situ on a programmable high density microfluidics chip as capture probes designed to target specific regions of interest in any genome (or transcriptome). Samples are hybridized to the chip, undesired sequences are washed off and the captured target sequences are recovered by eluting them f r o m the chip. The selected target sequences are ready for high-throughput sequencing or further processing.

When target selection in-solution makes sense, this flexible chemistry can directly synthesize biotinylated or phosphorylated oligonucleotides (capture probes) that are designed to target specific genomic/sequence regions of interest. After hybridization with a sample, magnetic beads are added and the capture probes are affinity linked to the beads. The captured target sequences are separated f r o m other sequences by washing the beads after which the target sequences can be recovered. Alternatively, the oligonucleotides (OligoMix®) may be immobilized on beads prior to target selection, again depending on the needs of the particular project.

LC Sciences currently offers its Target-Specific Selection application as a service, as it has successfully done with other applications of the µParaflo® technology such as miRNA profiling, small RNA discovery, kinase profiling and epitope mapping with peptide arrays, and others.

“We find that researchers would prefer to spend their valuable time focusing on their research, not figuring out how to make successful use of someone else’s new technology”, says Chris Hebel, Director of Business Development. “We offer a comprehensive solution: customers tell us their experiment goals, send us their samples and we provide the material ready for sequencing. There is no reason they need to become target selection experts to keep their research moving forward. We have already developed methods to design optimized hybridization probes and suitable experimental procedures and conditions for different sample types, such as miRNA, small RNA, or genomic DNA samples, on different sequencing platforms. We can even perform the high-throughput sequencing and deliver the results, as not all labs have access to next-generation sequencers yet.”

More information about LC Sciences’ Targeted Sequencing Sample Enrichment Service and the µParaflo® technology is available at:http://www.lcsciences.com/targeted_sequencing.html.

About LC Sciences – LC Sciences is a genomics and proteomics products company offering a comprehensive line of DNA, RNA, and peptide microarrays for nucleic acid/protein profiling and functional analysis, biomarker-discovery, novel drug screening, and the custom development of miniaturized assay devices for diagnostics and biosensing applications. Based on the µParaflo® microfluidics technology, LC Sciences’ innovative products and services offer significant flexibility and customization capability for rapidly evolving, diverse customer needs. In an era of rapid technological advancement, LC Sciences offers service products which enable efficient one-stop solution for assays of DNA, RNA, protein, enzymes, antibodies, or small molecules. LC Sciences also provides unique synthetic DNA and RNA products such as OligoMix®, generated using their microfluidic biochip synthesizer. These innovative products drive synthetic biology, systems biology and sequencing applications by reducing the cost and increasing the speed of highly multiplexing large-scale nucleic acid and protein engineering experiments.

After-Lite wins Green Home Eco Innovation Award

Released on: February 27, 2009, 7:02 am
Author: Tim S. LeMaster
Industry: Energy

Atlanta, Georgia – After 14 years of research and endless trials in the field of practical photo luminescent application, a unique product has emerged, and it’s been recognized by greenhomehints.com as a product contributing to making the planet a greener and healthier place for all.

After-Lite Energy-Free Lightingperforms absolutely as described. Its creator, Tim S. LeMaster, a professional inventor for the past 25 years, is no newcomer to the universe of photo luminescent technology. He has succeeded in taking what one used to think of as a glow-in-the-dark novelty and elevated it to a legitimate player in the quest for a greener, more energy-efficient lifestyle.

Here is a quick overview of what differentiates After-Lite from its glow-in-the-dark predecessors: It begins with a variety of advanced, high-grade, photo luminescent crystals. These proprietary rare earth minerals are processed under intense heat and pressure by a leading developer of unique photo luminescent safety products. The result is remarkable product that glows brightly for hours without requiring an energy source. LeMaster calls his creation a Crystal Energy Cell (CEC).

The crystal energy cell absorbs light, natural or manmade, during daylight hours or at times when a space is artificially lit. Absorbed light, in the form of photons, is stored by the crystal energy cell. Then, in low light or dark conditions, those photons are released, resulting in a soothing green glow allowing that space to be negotiated safely for hours without requiring energy to illuminate.

A CEC charged by the sun for as little as 3 minutes can be taken into a dark room and function nearly as effectively as a flashlight. Longer exposure to brighter, broader-spectrum light results in a brighter, longer-lasting illumination.

When partnered with a compact fluorescent light bulb (a proven energy-saver) the After-Lite Energy-Free System is a positive solution to generating light while contributing the the green initiative by not requiring energy to operate once it is in use.

Remarkably, the CEC will never loose its ability to recharge. Remove it from a failed light and attach it to a new bulb to provide light energy-free, over and over. Not only does the product save energy, it has positive security and safety benefits as well.

“Photo luminescence has already proved itself to be a lifesaver.” LeMaster says.

Photo luminescent paint was utilized in the World Trade Center towers after the first terrorist attack in 1993. Its widespread application provided visibility after power outages in the attack of 9/11 and has been credited for saving many lives.

“We supply helmet and tool patches to the fire departments of New York City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh, to mention a few. The same process has revolutionized energy-free signage for low-light conditions, saving municipalities thousands of dollars, and boosted safety standards in other applications from stairway lighting strips to subway platforms.”

After-Lite provides safety and comfort benefits. An After-Lite crystal energy cell will illuminate a room when the power goes out allowing safe negotiation around the room; or function as an energy-free night-light.

To casually compare the cost of a package of compact fluorescent light bulbs available at a retailer to the price of a complete After-Lite system is inaccurate.

“The compact fluorescent light bulb is an energy-saving consumable product which we provide as a platform for our After-Lite product, LeMaster notes. The bulb has a predictable lifespan. But the true value of our purchase proposition lies in the crystal energy cell, which will last for eons.”
