Boots reports boom of anti-ageing products for Mothers Day

Released on: February 29, 2008, 4:56 am

Press Release Author: Boots The Chemists

Industry: Retail

Press Release Summary: Sales figures released from Boots show that anti-ageing skincare products – like the cult beauty serum No7 Protect & Perfect – have been flying off the shelves in the run up to MotherРІР‚в„ўs Day

Press Release Body: New research from Boots reveals British Mums want to turn back the years this MotherРІР‚в„ўs Day. Sales figures released by Boots show that anti-ageing skincare products – like the cult beauty serum No7 Protect & Perfect – have been flying off the shelves in the run up to MotherРІР‚в„ўs Day.

Boots reports a 516% increase in the sales of its No7 anti-ageing skincare lines in the run up to MotherРІР‚в„ўs Day this year, compared with the same period last year. In February alone Boots sold over 700,000 No7 anti-ageing products, thatРІР‚в„ўs an average of over 3,500 every hour.

New consumer research from Boots supports this trend and reveals thereРІР‚в„ўs no longer a stigma surrounding buying anti-wrinkle cream as a gift for an older woman. More than eight out of ten (86%) British Mums said they wouldnРІР‚в„ўt be offended if their children bought them an anti-ageing treatment for Mothering Sunday (Omnibus research was carried out with 1,000 mums, from across the UK, by Redshift Research).

However, British children are more cautious with nearly a quarter (23%) saying they wouldnРІР‚в„ўt buy an anti-wrinkle cream for their Mum for fear of offending them. But the message from Mums is clear, 15% of those surveyed chose looking younger as their number one MotherРІР‚в„ўs Day wish, and a further 15% said theyРІР‚в„ўd like more time to themselves for pampering.

But British blokes better watch out as 43% of Mums said they believe itРІР‚в„ўs the responsibility of their partner to make sure they get pampered on Mothers Day Gifts. Furthermore, nearly half (46%) of Mums said they feel embarrassed telling their children what theyРІР‚в„ўd like to receive for MotherРІР‚в„ўs Day.

Fiona Lakin, Beauty Expert from Boots, commented: “From their first day at school to their wedding day children cause worry for their Mums, and it all adds to the number of wrinkles that appear over the years. This year children across the UK are helping their Mums turn back the clock by giving them the most sought after anti-ageing creams for Mother’s Day.”

Press Release Body: Opus Energy, a leading independent supplier of electricity to UK businesses, has joined forces with Cornwall Light and Power to secure the entire output of Renewable Obligation Certificates from the High Sharpley wind farm and Goonhilly Wind Farm on the Lizard. These certificates are purchased as part of Opus EnergyРІР‚в„ўs renewable obligation and provide support and funding for the development of renewable energy.

Cornwall Light and Power recently announced details of a Р’Р€20 million project to ‘repower’ the Goonhilly Wind Farm by replacing the 14 existing wind turbines with just six, increasing the amount of emissions-free electricity produced by nearly four times.

The purchase of Renewable Certificates is part of Opus Energy’s Environmental Commitment, which includes a pledge to secure cleaner sources of power for its customers. Last year, between April 2006 and March 2007, 66% of the energy supplied by Opus Energy to its customers came from cleaner, low-carbon sources – 47% from renewable generators and 19% from cleaner Combined Heat and Power (CHP) produced by CHP generators.

Charlie Crossley Cooke, Managing Director of Opus Energy said, “By working in partnership with independent renewable energy providers, we are supporting the development of renewable generation.”.

“Our customers are able to benefit directly from our commitment to greener energy, without the need for multiple, often confusing tariffs.”

Study reveals ways to increase the accuracy, timeliness, and cost effectiveness of Business Intelligence and Analytical solutions

Released on: February 27, 2008, 11:06 am

Press Release Author: MaxMetrics LLC

Industry: Computers

Press Release Summary: Organizations that make an investment in a decision making support entity, e. g. a Business Intelligence Competency Center or equivalent, reaped the benefits of more accurate, faster or more economical decision-making according to a recent study conducted by Troy University.

Press Release Body: In January, Troy University surveyed 529 management, business, and academic professionals from 50 countries representing 30 industries on “Decision Making Using Systems & Technology.” The survey was augmented by telephone interviews with a subset of 10 survey respondents. The research found that when respondents could identify a decision-making support entity of any name or structure within their organization, the organization was more likely to:

• use decision-making software (e.g., business intelligence, analytical, and performance management software) for strategic-decisions in automated ways across a broad spectrum of business areas,

• use advanced capabilities to forecast and predict strategic options,

• have a more pervasive usage of decision-making software throughout the corporate, business and functional levels of the organization,

• have a higher degree of user satisfaction with decision-making software, and

• have better collaboration between the IT and business functions in delivering solutions that support the organization’s growth strategy.

77% of the organizations with a decision-making support entity indicated that the entity has been effective in contributing to improvements in organization-wide financial performance. In addition, these organizations indicated that the entity helped with reducing the cost, time, or effort related to the decision-making software.

The research analyzed 14 characteristics (i.e., authorities and responsibilities) of any reported decision-making support entities. This analysis yielded some correlations between the 14 characteristics and positive impacts on organizational performance. According to Gloria J. Miller, one of the research co-authors, “In some areas the research re-affirmed things we already knew through our Business Intelligence Competency Center (BICC) experience. However, in other areas the research provides some fresh insights on the most relevant and significant characteristics for a BICC.”

“Through several of the interviews it became clear that the decision-making support entities play a key role in changing the mind-set of organizational leaders about using a data-driven approach to decision-making,” said Dr. Thomas D. Queisser the research co-author. The entities not only provide help, assistance, and competency development to the entire organization but in some cases, they conduct the analysis and present findings to executive management for action.

By playing a cross-organizational role in the strategic decision-making process, these support entities can spot emerging trends in the external environment as well as contribute to developing new competitive product offerings. This contribution was underscored by several of the interview candidates. For example:

• An Asian Financial Services interview candidate whose company offers credit products in rural areas noted that it is not good enough for the company to know the customer. The emerging trend is that the customer must know the company. Therefore strong communication and collaboration environments are needed with the customer.

• A European Financial Services interview candidate indicated that because of the analysis and effort of the entity, the organization was able to offer its clients a service it would not have been able to offer otherwise. This brought competitive advantage and financial benefit to organization.

The research indicated that according to organizational managers implementing a decision-making support entity can deliver superior decisions in a more accurate, timely, and cost effective manner.

The survey was conducted by Troy UniversityРІР‚в„ўs Heidelberg, Germany Site. The research was co-authored jointly by Troy University and MaxMetrics, an international Management and IT Consulting Company. The full results including interview cases will be published in May 2008.

Boots launches full No7 Protect & Perfect range after anti-ageing serum phenomenon

Released on: February 28, 2008, 7:12 am

Press Release Author: Carrie Eames

Industry: Healthcare

Press Release Summary: As a result of the phenomenal success of the No7 Protect & Perfect Beauty Serum in 2007, Boots has launched a full Protect & Perfect skincare range.

Press Release Body: After the amazing success of the No7 Protect & Perfect Beauty Serum in 2007, Boots has responded to demand from the British female population and has launched an entire Protect & Perfect skincare regime.

Women told Boots that they wanted a whole facial skincare regime based around the Protect & Perfect formulation, not just the Beauty Serum and so Boots has launched a range that has even more active ingredients working together to firm fine lines and wrinkles as well as making skin look younger and feel smoother.

The range has been formulated using an optimum blend of next-generation antioxidants. These help protect the skin from damaging exposure to a wide range of free radicals such as the sunРІР‚в„ўs rays, pollution and cigarette smoke. Plus because skin repairs and regenerates itself over time, ingredients have been added that work no matter what phase skin is in. Each of the products in the range contains the Protect & Perfect firming complex, with lipo-peptides and white lupin extract to help improve the appearance of skin after UV damage to collagen and elastin.

The No7 Protect & Perfect range has been expanded to include a day cream moisturiser, which includes SPF 15, the No7 Protect & Perfect Night Cream, an eye cream and a body moisturizer.

No7 Protect & Perfect Beauty Serum shot to fame in the summer of 2007 after a television documentary found it to be a skincare product proven scientifically to repair photo-aged skin and improve the fine lines associated with photo-ageing. Sales of the wonder cream increased by nearly 2000% the day after the TV programme, with 13 being sold every minute. At the height of the publicРІР‚в„ўs frenzy for the serum, BootsРІР‚в„ў production facilities were working around-the-clock to hit the target of 1,000 bottles an hour.

Pricey Platinum Pushes the Price of Air Pollution Control Products Skyward

Released on: February 27, 2008, 1:54 pm

Press Release Author: CleaAIR Systems

Industry: Environment

Press Release Summary: The effect of escalating platinum prices on the cost of reducing air pollution.

Press Release Body: Santa Fe, NM – February 27, 2008 – During Sunday’s CBS broadcast of 60 Minutes, veteran commentator Andy Rooney asked what was all the fuss concerning the recent astronomical rise in platinum prices. Rooney ranted “I don’t really know what platinum is. What do they do with platinum anyway?” When it comes to cleaning up air pollution, the answer is plenty.

Surprisingly, manufacturers of air pollution control products are the top consumers of platinum – not the jewelry industry. Platinum is the catalyst used inside of most catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters to rid exhaust emissions of dangerous soot, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. With ever-more stringent air quality regulations being enforced in the United States and Europe, the demand for platinum has soared with the demand to control air pollution in cars, diesel trucks, construction vehicles, and emergency generators.

A recent shutdown of South African mines caused an increase of 41% in platinum prices since the beginning of the year. As South Africa supplies 78 percent of the worldРІР‚в„ўs supply of this precious metal, even a stoppage of a few days has a worldwide effect on prices.

To put this dramatic rise in perspective:
– On February 21st, platinum reached an all-time high of $2,185 a troy ounce
– During the same month a year ago, platinum averaged $1,207 a troy ounce
– Five years ago, it averaged $684 a troy ounce during February of 2003

With an estimated worldwide shortage of 400,000 troy ounces predicted for 2008, prices may remain a volatile rollercoaster.

What effect does escalating platinum prices have on the cost of reducing air pollution?

Manufacturers of air pollution control products are finding it increasingly more expensive to produce catalytic converters and particulate filters mandated by the EPA, the European Union and the California Air Resources Board. “We used to adjust our product prices twice per year according to the rise and fall of platinum prices,” said Technical Sales Engineer, Ralph Wintersberger of CleanAIR Systems, a manufacturer of diesel particulate filters and oxidation converters. “Now we have no choice but to keep a close eye on platinum fluctuations and make daily adjustments to our prices.”

In the end, the ever-increasing cost of cleaning up air pollution is passed on to the consumer:
– As the price of platinum rises, the price tag on cars and trucks will also increase to cover the cost of catalytic converters made with high-priced platinum.

– Hospitals, schools, and data centers will feel the brunt of escalating platinum prices when they install diesel particulate filters on their emergency backup generators to decrease toxic air pollution.

– Diesel school buses are being retrofitted all over the country with converters to protect children from dangerous pollutants – a direct cause of asthma, bronchitis and other lung impairments. High platinum prices translates into fewer buses being retrofitted for the safety of riders.

– Mining equipment and construction vehicles are equipped with air pollution control technology to decrease on-site emissions of particulate pollution. The increased cost of catalyzed filters is passed on to the public in the form of durable goods, new homes and taxes to cover building and transportation projects.

Yes, Andy Rooney – you may not know what platinum is used for, but you will eventually feel the pinch of unprecedented soaring platinum prices in your pocketbook.

Microfluidic technology fuels the growing microRNA revolution – LC Sciences tops 30th customer publication

Released on: February 27, 2008, 9:15 am

Press Release Author: LC Sciences

Industry: Biotech

Press Release Summary: LC Sciences announced today the publication of the 30th peer-reviewed study by one of its customers using the companyРІР‚в„ўs microarray service for analyzing microRNA expression profiles and for discovery of novel small RNAs. These studies, by leading researchers in the field, contribute to a fast growing body of knowledge defining this recently discovered class of regulatory RNAs.

Press Release Body: Houston, TX – February 27, 2008 – LC Sciences announced today the publication of the 30th peer-reviewed study by one of its customers using the company’s microarray service for analyzing microRNA expression profiles and for discovery of novel small RNAs. These studies, by leading researchers in the field, contribute to a fast growing body of knowledge defining this recently discovered class of regulatory RNAs.

LC SciencesРІР‚в„ў microRNA profiling service, powered by its Р’ВµParafloР’В® microfluidic technology, provides quick, reliable, fully analyzed data enabling researchers to immediately move forward with innovative research, and publish their results faster. Microarray results require extensive validation prior to publication and the speed with which researchers using this microRNA profiling service have published their discoveries demonstrates the high-quality and reliability of these results.

It has become clear that the simple idea that DNA makes RNA which makes protein is not a complete picture. We now know that RNA does much more than just make protein. Transcriptome microRNAs and other small RNAs found in non-coding regions of genomes, once considered unimportant, even “junk”, have been found to regulate the expression of genes acting in almost every area of biology. The publications to date by LC Sciences’ customers span a diverse range of study areas, including cancer research, neuroscience, cardiovascular research, reproductive biology, plant science, virology, stem cell research, endocrinology, and small RNA discovery.

The study of microRNA has attracted intense attention and one of the most exciting aspects of this field is many scientists are now thinking about just how much more we donРІР‚в„ўt know. Just as the regulatory functions of some of the known microRNAs are finally understood, many more microRNAs are just being discovered. The number of microRNA sequences in the public database (miRBase) has been increasing steadily as new microRNAs are experimentally verified and deposited there.

Especially in this rapidly evolving field, it is important for scientists to have access to the most up to date information and research tools. LC Sciences is giving researchers an edge through the use of their flexible Р’ВµParafloР’В® technology. On chip synthesis (vs. spotting) of the most up to date microRNA probes sequences from miRBase as well as addition of custom sequences is enabled through a unique combination of microfluidics, digital photolithography, and novel synthesis chemistry. This ensures that researchers have the most complete picture of microRNA expression in their samples and, through the use of completely custom microarrays, allows for discovery of novel small RNAs as well as validation of computationally predicted microRNAs. The Р’ВµParafloР’В® technologyРІР‚в„ўs exceptional sensitivity and specificity, and unique ability to stay current in this rapidly developing field has enabled groundbreaking research, as evidenced by the number of studies which have appeared in high impact journals, including Nature, Science, PNAS, Nucleic Acids Research, and RNA.

The 30th study, entitled “Endogenous human microRNAs that suppress breast cancer metastasis” appeared in the January 10th issue of Nature. Researchers at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center uncovered a set of microRNAs for which expression is specifically lost as human breast cancer cells develop metastatic potential. They further showed that restoring the expression of these microRNAs in malignant cells suppresses lung and bone metastasis by human cancer cells in vivo. The strong association of the loss of expression with metastatic relapse suggests the potential for the use of these molecules in prognostic stratification of breast cancer patients in addition to conventional clinical and pathological staging markers.

“We are very excited about the announcement of the 30th peer-viewed publication by one of our customers,” says Chris Hebel, Director of Business Development at LC Sciences. “This (microRNA) is turning into a very competitive area of research and scientists are racing to be the first to describe the mechanism of microRNA as it relates to their field of study. We’re finding that many researchers will send us samples that have no relation to any of the previously described microRNA regulated areas just to see if microRNA is involved in any way at all in their system. We’re happy to provide the first step into this exciting new field for them.”
